MATHEMATICS

Maths will be taught daily in a discrete lesson and through cross curricular activities.

The aim of the maths curriculum is for children to become fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics, to be able to reason mathematically and solve problems.

Maths teaching can be grouped into four main themes:

Number Sense: Understanding the number system, counting numbers, negative numbers, fractions and decimals. Children need to explore place value, comparing and ordering numbers and rounding.

Additive Reasoning: Addition and Subtraction and their use to solve problems and across contexts such as measure and statistics. Children should understand equivalence and opposing facts and be able to use them in their maths. Children will learn both mental and written methods explaining their decision making.

Multiplicative Reasoning: Multiplication and division and their use to solve problems across contexts. Children should understand equivalence and opposing facts and be able to use them in their maths. Children will learn both mental and written methods explaining their decision making.

Geometric Reasoning: Shape and space, understanding the properties of shapes, 2D and 3D and the relationship between them. They should be able to use this knowledge to solve problems such as finding volume, perimeter and circumference.
